Great Koala National Park Panel

Securing the Future of Koalas: The Great Koala National Park

The Great Koala National Park would be the biggest forest-area protected in NSW in over a decade – and it’s our best shot at helping koalas survive in the wild since they were officially listed as endangered.

And it isn’t just about koalas – it’s about protecting countless threatened species that call these forests home, including gliders.

The NSW Government has promised to create the park, but they haven’t yet decided how much of it will actually be protected. That’s why we’re urging the Minns Government to go all-in and safeguard the full 176,000 hectares.

Protecting an Endangered Species

Koalas are facing significant challenges in NSW, Queensland, and the ACT, where they have been classified as endangered since 2022. Habitat loss, primarily due to land clearing and logging, remains one of the biggest threats to their survival. Experts warn that without stronger protections, koalas could disappear from the wild in NSW by 2050.1

The Great Koala National Park would protect over 12,000 koalas as well as other endangered species, including the Southern Greater Glider.2
